Instructions
 

  • Step 1: Prepare the Apples
  • Peel, core, and slice apples into ¼-inch thick slices.
  • Toss the sliced apples with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  • Step 2: Cook the Filling on the Stovetop
  • In a large saucepan, whisk together sugar, brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  • Add water and stir until smooth.
  • Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture starts to bubble and thicken (about 3-5 minutes).
  • Step 3: Add the Apples
  • Stir in the sliced apples and coat them evenly.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples soften but hold their shape.

  • Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract.
