Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking sheet
  • Oven
  • Sharp bread knife
  • Garlic press (optional)
  • Cheese grater (if using block cheese)

Ingredients

  • For the Sloppy Joe Filling:
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20 recommended
  • 1 small yellow onion diced
  • 1/2 green bell pepper diced (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Garlic Bread Base:
  • 1 French bread loaf cut in half horizontally
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cloves garlic finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan optional
  • Pinch of salt
  • For Topping:
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Make the garlic butter: In a small bowl, mix softened butter, minced garlic, parsley, Parmesan, and a pinch of salt.
  • Prepare the bread: Slice the French loaf in half lengthwise. Spread garlic butter generously on both halves. Place them cut side up on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 5–7 minutes until lightly golden.
  • Cook the meat filling:
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add diced onion and bell pepper; sauté 3 minutes.
  • Stir in garlic, cook 1 more minute.
  • Add ground beef, cook until browned (6–8 minutes), breaking up as you go. Drain excess fat.
  • Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire, mustard, and brown sugar. Simmer for 8–10 minutes until thickened.
  • Assemble: Spoon Sloppy Joe filling evenly over toasted garlic bread halves. Top with shredded cheese.
  • Bake: Return to oven and bake for 10–12 minutes, until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Broil (optional) for 2–3 minutes for extra crispiness—watch carefully!
  • Slice and serve warm, garnished with parsley.

Notes

Make it spicy by adding jalapeños or red pepper flakes to the beef.
Use plant-based ground meat and dairy-free cheese for a vegan version.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and reheated in the oven or air fryer for best texture.
